ICE CREAM THAT CHANGES COLOUR

An ice cream which changes colour as it slowly melts has been invented by a physicist who became a professional cook.

Manuel Linares took a course in ice cream making which included encouraging students to make a new flavour.

37-year-old Spaniard studied physics and engineering at university before deciding to become a cook, and has created the new ice cream, called "Xamaleon", meaning "chameleon".

The ice cream supposedly turns from blue to purple as it starts to melt. He is staying tight lipped over the secret behind how the colour change works in his recipe.

The ice cream he created, which he says tastes like tutti-frutti, includes strawberries, cocoa, almonds, banana, pistachio, vanilla and caramel, and is so popular that business at his ice cream parlour in the town of Calella de Mar, in the east Spanish province of Barcelona, is booming.

A boy suffering from a rare medical condition has had 232 teeth surgically removed – and is still left with 28 in his mouth.

Ashik Gaval had experienced pain in his jaw for a year-and-a-half before leaving his Indian village and seeking treatment in the city.

The 17-year-old was admitted to JJ Hospital in Mumbai, India, with swollen gums.

But doctors there found the pain was being caused by a complex composite odontoma and he went under the knife on Monday.

Dr Sunanda Dhiware said: "Ashik's malaise was diagnosed as a complex composite odontoma where a single gum forms lots of teeth. It's a sort of benign tumour"

"At first, we couldn't cut it out so we had to use the basic chisel and hammer to take it out.

"Once we opened it, little pearl-like teeth started coming out, one-by-one."

Ashik's father Suresh Gavai said: "I was worried that it may turn out to be cancer so I brought him to Mumbai."

The hospital believes it is a world record for the most of teeth ever extracted.

Ashik will have his remaining teeth capped when he is fully recovered from the operation, although experts say there is a chance the condition could recur.
