Learning has been paralyzed in most public universities after students go on strike to protest delayed release of Helb loan.

University of Nairobi and Technical University students have taken to the streets blocking major roads in the protest.

Students from universities in Kenya had given the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) up to 10 a.m to remit funds to their accounts or they will hold demonstrations.

Police officers have launched teargas to disperse the students however, HELB CEO Charles Ringera said they had released Sh1.8b yesterday which he said the students will be able to access starting today.

However more than 56,938 government-sponsored first year students who started reporting last month will have to wait until November to get loans.
