Nine passengers escaped death
narrowly after a matatu they were traveling in was hit by a train along the
Naivasha-Gilgil line.
However, five passengers were left fighting for their
lives after the early morning accident along the Moi North Lake road. The
accident occurred after the matatu which was heading to Naivasha town from
Eburru trading center stalled on the railway line.
A witness said that the
driver of the matatu underestimated the speed of the oncoming train and tried
to cross despite the loud hooting from the train. "The accident occurred
very fast and none of the passengers managed to escape from the matatu that was
dragged for over 100m," said the witness.
Naivasha OCPD Charles Kortok
confirmed the incident saying that the driver of the matatu was among those
injured. "One side of the matatu was completely ripped off and the injured
were rushed to Naivasha sub county hospital," he said.
The superintendent
in charge Dr Joseph Mburu termed as serious the condition of the five
passengers who were suffering from fractures and head injuries.
